Touch Screen Not Responding or Ghost Touching? Test and Fix Guide

A touch screen has two ways of failing: it ignores you, or it acts without you. Both are maddening because the screen is also how you would fix it. This guide gets you to a clear diagnosis in a few minutes, using two modes in the browser test, then walks through the fixes from free and instant to a digitizer replacement.
Step 1: Map the problem with the grid test
Open the touch screen test and choose Grid mode. The screen divides into cells that turn green when touched. Swipe slowly over every cell, including right up to the edges and into the corners, and watch which ones stay unlit. Then read the shape of what is left:
- A strip along one edge, or a band across the screen, is the classic signature of a damaged digitizer. Drops that crack the glass and cheap replacement screens both produce this.
- A single cell or two can be a genuine defect or a speck under the protector. Clean and retry before concluding anything.
- Random scattered cells that change each time usually point to interference or moisture rather than damage.
- Everything lights, but you had to press hard means reduced sensitivity, which is almost always a protector, a case, or a wet or oily screen.
Switch to Draw mode and drag a straight line across the screen with one finger. A line that breaks or jumps in the same place every time confirms a dead zone; a line that wanders when your finger did not means the panel is tracking badly.
Step 2: Catch ghost touches with watch mode
Ghost touches are taps and swipes the phone registers with nobody touching it. They show up as apps opening on their own, text typing itself, or the phone refusing to sleep. Put the device flat on a table, pick Ghost watch in the test, and take your hands away for the ten-second countdown. Every touch recorded during that time is drawn in red with its coordinates.
Run it three times under different conditions: on battery, then plugged into the charger, then with the case and screen protector removed. If ghost touches appear only on the charger, the charger is the problem. If they cluster along a crack or in one corner, the digitizer is physically damaged. If they vanish with the protector off, you have found your fix. If they are random and the screen is clean and dry, the digitizer or its controller is failing.
Fixes, from easiest to hardest
- Clean and dry the screen. Capacitive screens sense the change in electrical field from a fingertip, and water, sweat, and skin oil do the same thing. Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. If the phone was recently wet, even from rain or a steamy bathroom, power it off and leave it somewhere warm and dry for a day; moisture between the glass and the touch layer causes ghost touches until it evaporates.
- Remove the screen protector and case. Peel the protector off completely and pull the case off, then repeat the grid and ghost tests. Thick glass protectors, protectors with lifted edges or trapped dust, and cases that press on the screen edge are the single most common cause of both symptoms. If this fixes it, buy a thinner protector and fit it in a dust-free room.
- Change the charger. Use the original charger and cable, or a certified one, and try a different wall socket. Non-original chargers with poor isolation leak mains noise into the phone, and the touch controller reads it as fingers. This is worth trying even if the ghosting seems to happen off the charger, since a laptop USB port can do the same thing.
- Restart, then update. A restart clears a hung touch driver, which happens more often than most people expect. Then install any pending system update; touch firmware fixes ship in them regularly.
- Rule out an app. Boot into safe mode on Android (hold the power-off button on screen until the safe mode prompt appears) and repeat the test. Safe mode disables third-party apps, including overlay apps, screen filters, and accessibility tools that can intercept touches. On an iPhone, check Settings, Accessibility, Touch for Touch Accommodations, AssistiveTouch, or a Hold Duration that has been switched on.
- Check sensitivity settings. Many Android phones have a Touch sensitivity, Glove mode, or Screen protector mode toggle under Display; turning it on compensates for a thick protector. Some phones also have an accidental touch protection setting that ignores touches near the edge, which can look like a dead strip if it is over-eager.
- Run the manufacturer's diagnostic. Samsung phones have a hidden test menu reached by dialling a service code in the phone app, and the Samsung Members app includes a touch test. Other brands have similar tools in their support apps. These test the panel below the level of the operating system, which is useful if you suspect software.
- Reset a reseated cable (repaired devices). If the screen was recently replaced and touch is intermittent, the display ribbon cable is often not fully seated. A repair shop can open the phone and reseat it in minutes; this is worth trying before paying for a second screen.
Calibration on Android and iPhone
Older resistive touch screens needed calibration because the pressure-sensing layer drifted. Modern capacitive screens do not; the controller calibrates itself against the panel's baseline every time it wakes, and neither Android nor iOS offers a user calibration for it. Apps that promise to "calibrate" a phone's touch screen either adjust nothing at all or change an accessibility setting. If touch is offset (you tap one place and it registers elsewhere), the cause is a damaged digitizer, a badly fitted replacement panel, or, occasionally, a bent frame after a drop. The calibration you can do is indirect: a restart forces a fresh baseline, and letting a wet or cold phone come to room temperature before use avoids a bad baseline being captured.
When it is the digitizer
If a dead zone or ghost touching survives everything above, with the protector and case off, the screen clean and dry, on battery, after a restart and update, and in safe mode, the digitizer has failed. On most phones and tablets the touch layer is laminated to the display, so the repair is a full screen assembly. Prices vary enormously by model, and the quality of replacement panels varies too: a cheap aftermarket screen is a common source of the very faults it was fitted to fix, so use original or well-reviewed parts. Before committing, run the dead pixel test to see whether the display itself has damage, since a phone with both a bad digitizer and a bad panel is sometimes not worth repairing.
Laptops and monitors with touch are a different case. The touch layer is often a separate part with its own USB connection, so a failed digitizer can be disabled in Device Manager and the machine used with a mouse (check the mouse tester if the pointer is also misbehaving) while the display itself is unaffected.
